During the summer, the Mediterranean region, spanning popular destinations such as the French Riviera, Spanish Costa del Sol, Italian Amalfi Coast, and Greek islands, experiences a marked uptick in crime due to increased tourism.
Common threats include petty theft, such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and hotel room burglaries, particularly in crowded beaches, nightlife districts, and transport hubs. Organized criminal networks often target tourists with scams, counterfeit goods, and credit card fraud. Violent crime remains rare but can occur in nightlife zones, particularly in areas where alcohol and drug use are prevalent.
For high-profile individuals, such as celebrities, executives, and diplomats, the risks intensify due to their visibility and perceived wealth. Threats may include targeted theft, unauthorized surveillance, paparazzi harassment, extortion attempts, or even kidnapping in rare but credible scenarios. Luxury villas, yachts, and vehicles can be particularly vulnerable without proper security controls.
Additionally, the digital exposure of personal locations on social media can increase the risk of opportunistic targeting. As such, discreet movement, close protection, secure transportation, counter-surveillance, and secure accommodation protocols are essential for mitigating exposure during Mediterranean summer travel.
